Household Charge Deadline should be extended. ‘Tax Cheat’ T.Ds should be fined now

Posted by | Uncategorized | 173 Comments

Cllr Derek Mitchell said that the deadline for paying this should be extended by a month to enable people plenty of time to pay before penalties. There has been confusion in people’s minds. However I am very critical of left wing and Sinn Fein T.Ds being ‘tax cheats’ by refusing to pay. Many of them are paid over €100,000 a year from taxes paid by ordinary workers and it is outrageous that they refuse to pay their share and are urging others not to pay while taking their salaries. I…

Mitchell asks Minister for Justice to Ensure Fines Collected

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

About half of fines are not collected. This is a fraud on compliant citizens who pay fines on time and it damages the Justice System. At a recent meeting I asked the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, to introduce a system of deducting unpaid fines from Wages and Social Welfare. It makes no sense for the Government not to be able to collect fines while paying people on a weekly basis. The Minister said that he would introduce legislation in the Autumn to enable fines to be deducted. The previous…

Cllr Mitchell welcomes move to deduct Fines from Wages of T.D’s

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Some 17 TD’s are threatening not to pay the €100 Household Charge. It is disgraceful that TD’s, who are paid €90,000 a year by the State to make laws, should threaten non payment. The Government is introducing laws to ensure that fines can be deducted in small instalments from wages and social welfare as currently about 25% of Court fines for Criminal behaviour are never collected. At present the only alternative to non payment is to imprison them which is too drastic. I have lobbied to make fines deductable from…

Anglo Irish debt should not be repaid

Posted by | Uncategorized | 1,923 Comments

This week Anglo-Irish Bank, with Government backing, is going to repay a Billion of unsecured long term bebt at great cost to the taxpayer. I dont think the Anglo bonholder payments due currently should be paid. Standing up to the madness of paying them would give the Government credibility with the markets that it could repay later secured Government debts and with the public for future harsh measures needed to balance the budget.

Concern Travellers may be declared an ‘Ethnic Minority’

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter stated to a UN meeting that he is considering giving in to Travellers demands and defining them as an ‘Ethnic Minority’. I think this does not make sense as Travellers have the same Ethnic background as most Irish people but have decided themselves to live in a partly separate style. Policy needs to be changed to encourage Travellers to have more respect for the Community and their neighbours and to stay in Education longer. The present Multicultural policies create division and separate development like Apartheid…

Over 5,000 People enjoy Fireworks at New Greystones Harbour

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Friday’s Culture Night saw the reopening of Greystones Harbour. Orchestras and Irish Music were playing from a stage. The highlight was a spectacular fireworks display from the ends of both new harbour walls and from a rope over the entrance. Over 5,000 people were there most sitting on the steps in a semi circle around the water which formed a great arena. Congratulations to Cllr. Grainne McLoughlin who organised the night. ‘Most people were surprised at the large size of the public space as they had thought of it as…

Cllr Mitchell disappointed Sugarloaf SAAO Rejected

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Wicklow County Council on Monday rejected putting a Special Amenity Order on The Sugarloaf by a margin of 14 against and 4 in favour. ‘I am very disappointed at this decision as the Sugarloaf is a great recreational area and an SAAO would give it added protection’. Council officials have put a great deal of effort over some years into drawing this up. Originally it was to cover quite a wide area but the rejected proposal had been reduced so that it excluded all houses and quarries. Some years ago…

Irish Rail considering ways to allow Breeches Bridge to remain open

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Following my meeting with Irish Rail engineers they are now considering how to allow pedestrians across this safely. A long term solution might be to replace the bridge deck with one having a separate pedestrian path. This has to be designed and costed and could not be implemented before next year. Funding would have to be found. As a temporary measure, when they fence the rail line in September they might allow bridge access through gates with extra signs and instructions for the train to whistle. In some cases birdwatchers,…

Greystones Harbour. GUBOH’s desire for more meetings will delay opening

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

I have seen GUBOH’s press release and am writing to correct some errors in it. Guboh state that there is no starting date for the works yet we were all told that work had started. Possibly Guboh misheard. I do not support the request to open it in August before it can be made safe. This approach would endanger the public. The hoardings at the North end are required to contain noise and dust from the extensive works on The Medical Centre and green area. These residents have complained about…
