Irish Rail have confirmed that when erecting a safety fence at Kilcoole they will leave a gap, with swing gates, so pedestrians can cross. ‘Originally they were going to close the Breeches Bridge to pedestrians which would have cut the attractive walk from Greystones to Wicklow Town. I have been discussing this with Irish Rail engineers for some time and they have now agreed to leave it open with gates and instructions for the train to whistle and slow’. This will be temporary and they will design a separate walkway,…

Bus information signs which give the time to arrival of the next 4 busses are to be live in a number of locations including 3 in Greystones and 7 in Bray and a number of more rural places. However Kilcoole and Charlesland have been left out in spite of my demanding signs earlier in the year. In the recent Census Kilcoole was one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and Charlesland is the second largest private estate. They must have higher usage figures than many places allocated these signs….
A new bus information system is currently being trialled in Dublin Centre. Once tested and live it will be spread out to the suburbs. However only 13 locations are being considered for North Wicklow, way below the percentage of population in the area. ‘We seem to get ignored in Regional Initiatives and it is essential that we get more of these displays’. These signs show the next 4 busses arriving at the bus stop and the time to arrival, similar to DART stations. They are useful especially further out where…
The National Transport Authority is preparing a Strategy until 2030. The Draft Plan left out many things which are important to Wicklow and if they are not in this plan there will be no hope of getting them funded. These include: · Improving the M50/N11 junction where the most serious traffic jams occur, · Extending the Leinster Outer Orbital Route from Nass to the coast at Arklow. This was only planned to go from Drogheda to Nass and ignored Wicklow, · Providing Express busses along the M50 to major employment…
The road maintenance budget cuts for 2011 was discussed at Mondays Council meeting. The Government has seriously cut road maintenance grants when the roads have suffered badly in the snow. Greystones main street, Church Road, is in bits with disintegrating speed bumps and large potholes. These are especially bad at the edges which makes it difficult to cycle. We need to encourage cycling to get people out of cars. I asked that a budget is found to repair what is the main street of the second largest town in the…
Press Release Crazy that LUAS extension has no Parking. Should be provided at Loughlinstown It is crazy that the just opened LUAS extension to Cherrywood has no place to park. Motorists must go to the overcrowded Park n’ Ride at Sandyford!! I took the LUAS on Sunday and was amazed at the lack of parking, which is very bad planning. The Luas should have gone a couple of 100 metres more South across the old rail bridge at Loughlinstown where a Park and Ride should have been provided on state…
The Minister for Transport has said he plans to introduce more tolls on the M50. The existing ban on HGVs going from Wicklow on the N11to Dublin Port, the main National Port, forces them to use the M50 and doubles the mileage from Wicklow to Dublin Port thus doubling the cost of bringing goods to Wicklow. Introducing more tolls on the M50 will make transporting Wicklow goods more expensive. If the extra tolls are introduced then direct access from Dublin Port to the N11 should be restored through Sandymount. Motorists…
Councillor Derek Mitchell thanks the Wicklow Council crews who have gritted the roads for the last 17 nights, including Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day. This work is usually unseen by most people as it often involves gritting the roads from 8 pm to 2.30 am. This is the longest cold spell in recent years and the Council is running out of salt. The last of it is being saved for the first day most people are back at work the 4th. It is hoped that more can be secured…
In the Spring Irish Rail told the Town Council that they would provide more DARTs and have them at a regular time after each hour, called a ‘clock face timetable’ in October. I enquired when these would happen and was told that the disruption caused by the bridge collapse at Malahide had delayed this. Irish Rail still intends to introduce this when the bridge is fixed, hopefully before the end of November. The gap between 08.30 and 9.30 am is also to be filled. This will be a big improvement…
