Transport Plan gets it wrong on Wicklow

Posted by | Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

The recently published Draft Transport Strategy for the Dublin Region proposes that the LUAS goes to Bray which is welcome. However South of Bray the Strategy seriously understates current and future transport demand in Wicklow. Currently the roads are full and the rail line empty. The solutions planned will not work according to Cllr Derek Mitchell, Chair of the Council’s Transport Committee, who previously spent 22 years campaigning to get the DART to Greystones. ‘I counted the number of people getting on busses and trains in Greystones and it is…

Problems with Draft Transport Strategy for Greater Dublin Area 2035—-Submission re Wicklow The Strategy needs to be radically changed for Wicklow. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with the NTA and/or Irish Rail to discuss these detailed points: Survey of Transport Usage. Greystones peak hour Management Summary • The Strategy will not work South of Bray Head as it proposes 3 conflicting public transport options in different parts of the report. 2 of these (the present service and a shuttle) will not cater for the demand and will not…

Posted by | Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

Cllr Derek Mitchell, who is Chairman of Wicklow’s Transportation and Environment Committee, has been lobbying to get an upgrade of the M50/N11 included in the Department of Transports Statement of Strategy for the next 3 years. ‘the traffic congestion on this overloaded section of road hinders job creation and is very frustrating for the residents of East Wicklow’ ‘I have been trying to get this upgrade done for some years and met the previous Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, last December. He agreed to get a study done in 2014…

Traffic Jams on the M50/ N11

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Going South there are regular traffic jams in the evening back to Cherrywood and increasingly in the mornings going North back to Willow Grove. Of the 6 big radial roads out of Dublin, this is the only one which has not been modernised. It needs to be modernised as it is vital for the prosperity of East Wicklow. In the long run it needs a third lane. Some short term measures will ease congestion: Southbound, improving the off/on ramps at Fassaroe, reducing the number of exits (4 in a mile)…

Mitchell pleased that Council management agrees to maintain Charlesland Dual Carriageway

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

At Mondays meeting of Wicklow County Council it was decided to Take in Charge the Dual Carriageway. This followed a commitment from management to maintain it, subject to next year’s budget process. At a previous meeting Council officials had said that there was no money to maintain it while other officials said we were legally required to Take it in Charge and hand back the bond. I proposed that it would be left as previously unless there was a commitment to maintain it. This had narrowly passed and put adequate…

Mitchell supports Charlesland Residents demand to get the Council to maintain Dual Carriageway Wicklow County Council has taken the central Charlesland green in charge. However, in a narrow vote the councillors refused to take the Dual Carriageway in charge as Council staff said there were no funds for planned maintenance. Council officials wrote to the Charlesland Residents Committee asking them whether they would maintain it. The Committee has now written back to say they will not maintain it as they feel it should be maintained by the Council. ‘The Committee…

Mitchell wants N11 improved with 5 point Plan

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Cllr Derek Mitchell has written to the Minister for Transport to ask for a meeting to present him with a plan to reduce traffic congestion on the N11. When economic growth resumes these traffic jams will get much worse, The National Roads Authority has refused to deal with this and I want the Minister to get this plan implemented. On the Southbound lane junction improvements are needed at Fassaroe and a significant improvement is needed at the Kilcroney junction to allow traffic flow more freely. On the Northbound lane a…

National Transport Authority Plan ignores Wicklow

Posted by | Greystones, Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

This Plan which will set transport improvements up to 2018 ignores Wicklow in spite it having grown more than 3 of the 4 Dublin Councils. 45% of the population of Wicklow lives in the Metropolitan area and is thus obliged to accept high density development as happened with Charlesland. This % is much higher than other Mid East Counties. Population targets handed down to Councils insist on a large expansion of zoned land, for example, Greystones was required to rezone extra land for 24,000 compared to a current 17,500. The…

Specialised Pothole filling truck to be used in Greystones

Posted by | Community Facilities, Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

At Greystones Town Council, Councillor Derek Mitchell said that many potholes appear again within a year after being filled. ‘Wicklow County Council purchased a specially equipped truck in 2008 but it had never been used in the Greystones Area though it is used extensively in the East and South of the county. This special equipment produces better compaction and the repair is supposed to last much longer.’ It was agreed that this equipment should be used in Greystones and hopefully will result in a much better job.

Transport to North Wicklow seizes up again – National Transport Authority needs to do better

Posted by | Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

Transport to North Wicklow seizes up again. National Transport Authority needs to do better. People have again been stuck in their cars for over 3 ½ hours due to problems with the M11. DART services have again been halted between Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey probably because falling trees have cut the electric wires. The DART service frequently stops here either because of flooding or trees falling and also has a low speed limit. Fridays M11 closure for most of the day was due to flooding but delays are very frequent…
