I was asked by a manufacturing company, seeking 3 acres, to expand about where there are suitable sites in the area. Many employees live locally and they want to remain in the area. They approached the IDA about their 64 acre site in Greystones but were rebuffed. I feel it is wrong that manufacturing sites are not available as Greystones has a very low number of people working locally which forces so many to commute. I asked the Council to intervene with the IDA. However the IDA has said they…

Bord Pleanala has granted permission for a 59% expansion of the Lidl store in Blacklion, Greystones. They also allowed the number of parking spaces to be reduced from 234 to 181. Lidl are required to provide land to inset the busy bus stop and to provide a left turn lane which will help traffic whenever built. No deliveries to or from the store are allowed at night (from 2200 to 0600 hours nor at school entry and leaving times (0800 to 930 and 1300 to 1530). ‘I objected to this…
Wicklow Co Co has granted permission for a 60% larger Lidl store at Blacklion with a reduced number of parking spaces. I had objected to this as it will increase the already bad traffic jams in the area and the Council has now made a condition that they must provide land for a left turn lane and an inset bus stop. This will help traffic flow but there are no funds to do the work at the junction. I don’t think this extra commercial activity should happen until the junction…
Prepared by Cllr Derek Mitchell, Chair Strategic Policy Committee on Roads, Transport and Environment. 087-2574969. Mitchelldc0@gmail.com February 2016 Management Summary Wicklow’s Community Benefit has stopped in 2015 after a century and a half. Wicklow supplies Dublin with 89% and Kildare with 75% of their water. It has been recognised since 1861 that Wicklow needed to benefit in return. A direct benefit was received or payment made for 153 years up to 2014 but this benefit has not been paid yet for 2015. It needs to be paid and put on…
Cllr Derek Mitchell has objected to the planning application by Lidl to expand their store in Greystones. ‘the traffic in the Blacklion area is very congested, some people tell me it can take an hour to get from Hillside to Bray, and the long delayed plans to improve the roads must be completed before this store expands and adds extra traffic’. The Council has been planning the Blacklion to Delgany Road since 1989 but it is a long way from completion. Also planned for many years are improvements to the…
A company called Kavere La Touche has recently applied for planning permission to develop 26 houses of 3 and 4 stories in the shell of the old hotel and 58 car spaces. They also intend to use the old bank for commercial purposes and to redevelop 1,000 m2 of commercial space behind the frontages of 2 houses on Marine Terrace. A public open space, seats, a play area and lawn will face the sea. Cllr Derek Mitchell said ‘The most prominent building in Greystones, the front and back walls of…
Fine Gael Councillor Derek Mitchell said “Reducing the top rate of income tax from 41% to 40% and increasing the standard rate tax band above which the top rate of tax is paid by €1,000 to €33,800 will make a significant difference for working families and individuals. Last May I lobbied Minister Noonan, through the FG Party, to greatly reduce the USC on people paid the minimum wage in order to Make Work Pay and am pleased this was listened to as the USC has been substantially reduced for those…
Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council is planning to build a large town at Cherrywood with lots of retail and office development. Bord Pleanala is holding an Oral Hearing into the plans this week. I am very concerned that the N11/M50 will seize up with all the people who are expected to commute from Wicklow. Traffic jams regularly stretch back 4km from Fassaroe even before Cherrywood is built. I have objected to the plan and told the Oral Hearing that improving this road must be a precondition of this plan. The National Roads…
Construction recently started on a large manufacturing premise for Procap. The large IDA site has been waiting for industry for 30 years and it’s great to see this being built. The firm is currently based on a restricted site in Newtownmountkennedy. The 8000 sq. m building is for production, warehousing and distribution on a 3ha site which will allow plenty of space for future expansion. The building should be finished by the end of the year. The firm is a major player in the European precision cap market and in…
