New housing estates have to have a certain number of crèche spaces depending on their size. However developers are leaving building them till last and house buyers have to go elsewhere to get a place which is awkward for them and adds to traffic congestion. Glenheron in Greystones, built by Cairn, has been occupied for 5 years but the crèche has not been built, never mind opened. The children will be past the crèche stage by the time it is opened! This is not fair on parents who both have…

Minister for Transport Eatmon Ryan postponed work on the N11 upgrade for 2022 & 2023. This would have provided a proper priority for buses, doubling the public transport mode share from Arklow & other Wicklow places. An Interim Bus only priority scheme was then pursued expecting it just needed painting white lines on the road. This has been worked on by consultants and even a partial bus lane is now projected to cost €112m! Also the Interim plan will hinder the proper separation of crossing traffic, buses, cycles & cars…
The Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy has been published after much consultation by the National Transport Authority. The main Wicklow items with target dates are: Enhancing the level of DART service to Greystones as part of DART+ South. This is to be done by partially double tracking the line as recommended in my plan of 2018 and validated by a subsequent Jacobs Study. Consultation was to have been done in 2022 but has been delayed to 2023. Implementation is before 2030. Providing electrified train services to Wicklow Town, Nass/Sallins &…
Exploratory site works have started on the Greystones Media Campus which received Planning Permission a year ago. Once fully developed, the state-of-the art Greystones Media Campus will be Ireland’s largest studio complex offering 14 sound stages for use by domestic and international production companies. ‘The Campus will contribute to the creation of many jobs and reduce the reliance on commuting though it will be sad to see those field go’, said Cllr Derek Mitchell (FG)
The Land Development Agency described the 142 Cost Rental homes in Archer’s Wood scheme, the first scheme in the country. This has been heavily oversubscribed and the first ones allocated by lottery and people should move in January. 2 beds have been rented for €1455 pm. 94 1 beds will be offered in about 6 weeks for a lesser amount. ‘This sounds good value compared to the open market. I’m glad that this initiative will help the ‘squeezed middle’ who have not been able to afford a home.’ said Cllr…
Wicklow County Council is to look for bids to build an hotel and some other buildings such as apartments on land beside the Park n’ Ride site in Greystones. I welcome this and have long sought an hotel in Greystones. The Council outline plan suggested a 75 bed one, though I think it should be larger, have conference facilities and provide some extra space to add to the 450 Park n’ Ride spaces. The plan also suggests some apartments could be built and preserves many of the trees. The HSE…
On Monday 28th November the Council passed the budget unanimously without increasing the Commercial Rates as was originally recommended. A number of adjustments were made to some figures in light of better estimates. The Budget also includes 2 extra staff for Greystones as a result of a review of driver numbers. I analysed the figures and complained for years that there weren’t enough staff to cope with the rapid growth in Greystones and last year voted against the budget. The street cleaning machine has remained in the depot as there wasn’t…
