New Educate Together and Gaelscoile Primary Schools

Posted by | Community Facilities, Education, Greystones | No Comments

(photo) The population has expanded greatly over the last 5 years. In 2007 I did a study which showed that an extra 32 primary school classrooms and teachers would be needed by 2015. Much pressure was exerted on the Department of Education and the result is that an Educate Together and Gaelscoile have opened in September 2008 by Lidl. These have 8 classrooms each and can be expanded to 16 later. The Department built them in 3 months from the time they started digging which must be a record! We…

New Secondary School should be in Charlesland

Posted by | Community Facilities, Education, Greystones | 3,371 Comments

Because the town has expanded by 40% in the last 5 years another secondary school is needed in Greystones in a couple of years. A site near Lidl has been identified for it, however I think that a site on the IDA land in Charlesland would be better because it is near ready made sports facilities at the Swimming Pool, Community Centre and Recreation Park. There are also very good cycle lanes and footpaths to the site at Charlesland which is more sustainable. The IDA, having failed to attract jobs…

Swimming Pool and Community Centre

I was delighted to officially open the complex. Being Cathaoirleach of the County Council is an honour and a privilege at any time, but this was the highlight for me. The 25 metre swimming pool, Learner & Baby Pool, Aqua Fit Classes, aerobics studios and largest gym in Wicklow are great. The very flexible layout of the Community hall can have up to 8 Badminton Courts or other combinations of basketball courts or indoor soccer pitches & tiered seating. The music rehearsal room will be a great facility for all….

Progress on Harbour

The North Harbour Wall is 35% complete and the South Wall is 80% complete. Around 3500 of the 5000 large blocks have been cast. During the Winter the project became 3 months late. However February was a calm month and some time was made up. First the seabed is flattened and a fibre layer is laid, then about 10 (depending on the depth) large blocks are laid on top of each other, locking bars are inserted and rock armour is placed outside from the barge or shore. This is a…

Submission to Parking Regulation Review Greystones

Councillor Derek Mitchell, Cathaoirleach, Wicklow County Council, Kiltoorish, Manor Avenue, Greystones, Co. Wicklow. Phone/Fax 01-2874115(H), 087-2574969, 9th April 2009 mitchelld@ireland.com Myra Porter Greystones Town Clerk. Greystones Parking Regulations. I would like the following changes: 1. Bowling Club. A bowls match can take 4 hours and some of the people are elderly and have to carry the heavy bowls. We should facilitate them. I am told that in Bray they pay for 2 hours and with a window membership card they are allowed a further 2 hours free. I am also…

Redford Flooding Remedial Work

Posted by | Environment & Bray Head, Greystones | One Comment

Last August, following very heavy rain, Greystones had more flooding than anywhere else in Wicklow. There was considerable flooding at some houses in Redford Park. In most cases this was due to large amounts of water coming down Lr. Templecarrick Road as the drains were small or blocked. At Redford a wall fell down under pressure of water build up and this sudden flood caused problems. Since then the Council has worked to try to ensure that the water gets into and stays in the stream. Culverts have been cleared,…

Charlesland Builder still liable to Build Greystones Enterprise Centre and provide recycling centre site.

Posted by | Community Facilities, Greystones | 12,522 Comments

Last week Bord Pleanala turned down a large Shopping Centre in Greystones but granted permission for houses, offices, enterprise units and a petrol station. In December 2006 when the Council rezoned the site the developer signed an agreement which required him to donate a 3,000 sq.m. Enterprise centre and a site for a recycling centre to the town. Also it allowed the State to buy a site for a Primary School and a Garda Station. I have checked this agreement and consider that he is still liable to provide these…

Posted by | Community Facilities, Greystones, Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Dublin Bus attended the January meeting of Greystones Town Council and I raised the need to provide a bus shelters at Charlesland and Eden Gate directly with them. They said that they had a budget this year and would install shelters in a number of different locations which we asked about. This included Charlesland and Eden Gate. Hopefully this will now happen this year.

Potential need for extra Primary School Capacity

Posted by | Community Facilities, Delgany, Greystones | 2,357 Comments

Report by: Cllr. Derek Mitchell, Mayor Greystones. March 2007. (087-2574969) During discussions on the school site at Charlesland it struck me that building an 800 person school on the 5 acre site and moving the 350 person St Brigits school onto it would only increase primary school capacity by 450 people. I wondered whether this would be enough bearing in mind that the town expanded from 12,000 population in 2002 to 17,000 in 2007. 20,000 can be expected by 2010. Also there about 1,500 people in surrounding ares of Kilpeddar,…
