Cairn Appeal planning Refusal for 98 houses in Greystones

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

The refusal was primarily because Greystones is over the population target for 2028 of 21,727. The April Census last year show the population is 22,009.  Since then at least 500 houses have been occupied and 500 are being built which will give a population of 24,500 next year, 10% over the target for 4 years ahead of that. Cairn also applied for 586 houses and apartments in Blacklion. This section being part of the larger site but no decision has been made by Bord Pleanala in the 18 months since…

Mitchell meets with Codling Wind Farm Staff and asks for visual impact to be reduced.

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

I am concerned that the  Codling and Wind farms meeting off Greystones mean that this will have the biggest visual imposition of any place in Ireland and almost any place in the UK. Currently the plans are for turbines, taller than Bray Head, from Dun Laoghaire to Wicklow Town close to the coast. I recently met with the Senior management of Codling wind farm and stated that a substantial gap should be left between the two wind farms to reduce the visual impact. They are now working on the placing…

Greystones development refused as town exceeds target population

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

Wicklow Council has refused Cairn planning permission to build 98 houses at Coolgad, Greystones. The reason for refusal is that Greystones has exceeded its population target for 2028 and thus there is no need to build on peripheral greenfield sites on the edge of town, even if they are zoned residential. Last years Census showed that the population was 300 below the target of 21,727. There are over 1,000 houses with permission, many being constructed, so when occupied the population will be at least 23,000, probably 24,000. Cairn have applied…

Greystones Budget too low given huge Town expansion

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

The Greystones District Budget was discussed at the area meeting on Tuesday. Greystones expenditure is 11% of All District expenditure, a decrease of 1% but last years Census shows the population has increased from 18 to 20% of County Wicklow. The staff numbers are half those of other areas even though the population has expanded massively. An audit of all outdoor staff was to be done but was never completed. This lack of funding shows in low maintenance of public areas and lack of the public parks which you would…

Chapel Road, Greystones upgrade taking too long, since 1989!

Posted by | Bus/Train, Greystones, Local Work, Press Release, Transport | No Comments

This upgrade will provide a better road, with a cycle & foot path on either side from Delgany to Blacklion. It will join 5 schools with the many new houses in that area. This important link was put on the plans in 1989 and I have been pressing for completion for a decade. Sections have been done as part of housing developments but the Council remainder section seems to be taking forever. I asked for it to be on the agenda recently and was told it still had to be…

Bus times to Dublin Airport from Greystones as long as from Belfast!

Posted by | Bus/Train, Greystones, Local Work, Press Release, Transport | No Comments

We need to encourage people to take Aircoach to Dublin Airport instead of the car. The TFI app shows that it takes 1hr 39 mins from Greystones. Also as it goes through very congested parts of Dublin so one has to allow extra time when catching a plane. The bus used to be much quicker & more reliable when it went across the Toll bridge directly to the Airport Tunnel. Many have transferred from the bus to the car because of this, the opposite of what needs to be achieved. Dublin…

Council approves funding for Dr. Ryan Park, Chapel Road & Greystones Enterprise Centre

Posted by | Community Facilities, Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

The County Council has approved the 3 year Capital Investment Plan. I’m delighted that it includes a budget of €50,000 for improvement works to Dr. Ryan Park which has been neglected for decades and has anti-social issues. It should be an attractive location. The Chapel Road, Greystones cycle & road scheme is included at €16m, which is badly needed to cope with the many new houses west of Greystones. Also included is an indicative €8m for the partially built Enterprise Centre/Hub near Hawkins Wood. Greystones has virtually the lowest percentage…

Greystones needs an Artistic hub

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

There are many interested in creative arts and it needs to be fostered in the rapidly growing community. A group of well-known artists has  proposed a multifunctional space for artistic expression such as workshops, education, an exhibition and gallery facility, creative programming and engagement with the community. This would provide a valuable resource for artists and the general public for many arts and crafts disciplines. ‘I would like to see this happen and I think it would fit in well on the hotel site. It could potentially provide a working…

New Housing Estates left without crèches

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Press Release | No Comments

New housing estates have to have a certain number of crèche spaces depending on their size. However developers are leaving building them till last and house buyers have to go elsewhere to get a place which is awkward for them and adds to traffic congestion. Glenheron in Greystones, built by Cairn, has been occupied for 5 years but the crèche has not been built, never mind opened. The children will be past the crèche stage by the time it is opened! This is not fair on parents who both have…
