Posted by | Community Facilities, Greystones, Harbour, Local Business | 11 Comments

NAMA has replied to Greystones Town Council and stated that they are currently discussing funding for Phase 2 with the developer. While they give no indication of a decision they ‘are expecting that the matter will be brought to a conclusion within weeks’. The letter was in reply to a letter from the Town Council which was also pursued by Ann Ferris T.D. I am pleased that this is being brought to a conclusion after some years of delay and hope for a favourable decision so that construction can start…

Dear All, Following on from various meetings including community liaison meetings held last week, I attach for your information two layout drawings showing proposed public access arrangements pending completion of the Primary Care Centre (Option 1A) and following completion of the PCC (Option 1B). As you will recall it is proposed to commence construction of the PCC in September of this year and these works will take approximately one year to complete. Work on the erection of the permanent railing at the southern (Cliff Road) end of harbour will commence…

Harbour Plan Welcome

Posted by | Greystones, Harbour | No Comments

Final Greystones Harbour Plan welcomed Having consulted with the community Sispar has produced their final plan for September and are currently implementing it. This provides the best public boat launching facilities in Ireland even in this temporary solution. There is also good walking access to the area and South Pier together with car parking and green areas. To construct the Health Centre safely the hoardings at the North end will remain but the large green area there should open in a year. The South hoardings will be taken down. I…

Greystones Harbour Plan, Good feedback

Posted by | Greystones, Harbour | No Comments

The developers met Harbour Users and the wider Consultation Group last night (Tuesday) representing about 25 different groups in the town. Sispar have amended their plan to deal with some earlier consultation issues, reducing the parking area and providing a green area. Some spaces will now be for parking boat trailers. They also hope to open the permanent green area South of the Health Centre in about 10 months as construction permits.   Most groups were very pleased with the facilities provided especially the Boat Users. A number of suggestions…

Posted by | Greystones, Harbour | No Comments

Sispar told a meeting of Town Councillors that they intend to open temporary facilities by the end of August. This will consist of: · Taking down most hoardings and replacing with decorative railings thus opening up the views. The railings are already being made. · Opening the harbour beach and 2nd public slipway which is a calmer one. · Fencing the entire area to be given to clubs for boat parking, greatly improving facilities for Anglers, Rowers, Sea Scouts, Divers and Sailors. · Car Parking and wide access to the…

Greystones to Wicklow Walk. Meeting with Irish Rail

Posted by | Greystones, Wicklow | No Comments

Irish Rail will be fencing most of this for safety reasons and will close off to pedestrians the Breeches Bridge at Kilcoole. I met with Irish Rail last week and they have agreed to ask bridge engineers to design a solution which will probably be a separate pedestrian bridge. However this is likely to cost over €500,000 and money must be found. ‘At least if we have a solution designed we can lobby for funds to keep it open’ said Cllr Derek Mitchell.

Greystones new Secondary School should be an Educate Together one

Posted by | Greystones | No Comments

The Minister for Education has announced that a new Secondary school will be built in Greystones before 2017. The population expanded rapidly and there will be a shortage of places soon, so I am glad that the Minister has now recognised this. The site is owned by the Department and is close to Lidl. No Patron has been announced but I want to see an Educate Together School as this has the best chance of getting pupils to study in Greystones. Greystones is unusual as 60% of pupils go outside…

Greystones to Wicklow walk must be kept open

Posted by | Greystones, Wicklow | 426 Comments

For safety reasons Irish Rail will be fencing this track when the bird nesting season ends. Apparently it is the only unfenced section of track in the country. Currently they are planning to close off the bridges at Three Trout Stream and the Breeches, Newcastle. This will cut an important walk for tourists and locals alike. ‘I have written to The County Manager and Irish Rail demanding that they come up with a solution which keeps the walk open and satisfies safety concerns. A simple bridge can be provided…

Concerned Bord Pleanala decision will delay public access and the hoardings coming down

Posted by | Greystones, Harbour | No Comments

Bord Pleanala decided on the 6th April that the changes to include 34 extra homes in the Harbour Development need to have an Environmental Impact Statement. These changes will then have to be assessed by the Bord, the fifth time the Bord will decide on the Harbour Plan. This further delays the project by possibly a year. It had been hoped that the approval of the extra homes by Wicklow County Council would be adequate so that work could proceed and we can get the hoardings down. However ex Labour…

Greystones harbour. Council writes to NAMA urging quick decision.

Posted by | Greystones, Harbour | No Comments

Greystones Town Council is to write to NAMA urging them to make an urgent decision to fund the next stage of the harbour PPP so that the hoardings can come down as soon as possible. Cllr Derek Mitchell (FG) said that ‘it is in the interest of the town to get the hoardings down and the HSE Primary Care medical facility open quickly. Phaze 2 should cover its costs and allow the market for apartments to be tested and thus be in NAMAs interest. A quick decision is needed.’ The…
