At a recent Community Liaison meeting it was announced that the marine works for Greystones Harbour, including 2 Public slipways, would be completed by June 2010 which is about 4 months later than hoped. Sispar, the PPP partner of Wicklow County Council, are working late into the evening to complete this work.
The Draft of the next County Development Plan has been circulated to Councillors for decision in September. I have done as study of the new houses in the area and the population figures in the Plan greatly underestimate the growth that has already taken place in Greystones. The last accurate population figure of 14,600 was the 2006 Census, but since then a large number of houses have been completed and occupied and many are being built now and these have almost been ignored in the population estimates. Wicklow County Council is to enter Greystones into a National Competition for Sustainable Travel Areas. This is designed to increase walking and cycling and reduce car usage. Nationally €50m will be allocated over 5 years to Towns which will be selected after a competition.
I am delighted that Greystones South Beach has recovered its Blue Flag. This was lost last year and Council Staff, the Tidy Towns Assocaition and Coastcare have worked to get it back. The flag will be hoisted at the 12 noon on Thursday at the South Beach car park
Residents of Killincarrick Road in the Burnaby have asked Local Election candidates to commit to banning the Charlesland Shuttlebus from using the road because of the noise. I do not know why it goes that way and whether it needs to. The footpath from Holywell Estate in Kilcoole needs completing to the village. The path outside Holywell is good but people must now walk in the busy and narrow Sea Road for a short section and it is dangerous. A condition of the Planning Permission was that €37,000 should be paid by the developer to the Council so they could complete the path. The 2,000th block (out of a total of 5,000) of the seawall was laid at Greystones Harbour on the 21st May. This marks almost the halfway point in constructing the seawall. Two shifts will be worked until midnight, over the Summer to try to complete the seawall before the Winter storms.
