Greystones Cruiser Regatta, 2nd largest Sailing Event in Ireland

Sunday the 30th August is looking like a very busy day on Greystones waterfront with a very large sailing event in the morning and the Wicklow lifeboat and Coastguard helicopter expected later. On the Saturday many swimmers are expected for the Greystones Challenge Swim 1k 2k 3k 4k Event at the South Beach starting at 3 pm.

The Sailing Club and Marina are organising the Cruiser Regatta for the third year since the marina opened. This year over 140 boats are expected to race on Sunday. Boats from Holyhead will race over arriving on Saturday evening, most other boats will arrive from Arklow, Wicklow, Bray, Dun Laoghaire, Poolbeg and Howth during the afternoon. The race starts at 11 am Sundayoff Greystones, the exact place depending on the wind at the time.

‘With over 700 sailors racing this will be the 2nd largest sailing event in Ireland. The town will be lively for the weekend with so many staying in the marina. It should be quite a spectacle to see so many boats leaving the harbour at about 10.30am and at the start of the race’.

The lifeboat is expected to arrive at 2.30 pm and will simulate a rescue operation with the helicopter around the seafront at about 3 pm.
