Wicklow Council votes for massive housing increase

At Monday’s council meeting the population targets section of the Development Plan was passed. The housing involves a massive 8,000 increase in houses in Bray and a 5,000 increase in Greystones. I proposed reducing the expansion and also making some of the expansion dependent on the N11/M50 and Public Transport being improved. This was supported by Fine Gael Councillors, John Ryan, Grainne McLoughlin and Irene Winters, however a big majority of Councillors voted to expand even without a transport improvement being a condition.

Sinn Fein and even the Green Party voted for this huge expansion without conditions about providing transport first: ‘most Councillors don’t seem to understand the difficulties faced by commuters, they just seem to want maximum rezoning’.

‘I was particularly disappointed that Greystones Councillors Tom Fortune and Jennifer Whitmore did not support my proposal to reduce the massive expansion planned for Greystones nor linking it to N11 improvements. My proposal to make building the Delgany to Blacklion Road a condition for expansion was also defeated even though it is really badly needed.
