Mitchell asks Bord Pleanala to ensure N11/M50 improved before Cherrywood is built

Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council is planning to build a large town at Cherrywood with lots of retail and office development. Bord Pleanala is holding an Oral Hearing into the plans this week. I am very concerned that the N11/M50 will seize up with all the people who are expected to commute from Wicklow. Traffic jams regularly stretch back 4km from Fassaroe even before Cherrywood is built. I have objected to the plan and told the Oral Hearing that improving this road must be a precondition of this plan.

The National Roads Authority stated in a letter that it supported the plan. However I discovered a 3 year old NRA Report which stated that the road is ‘not suited to cater for the current volume of traffic’ I told the hearing that this undermined the Plan unless the road improvement was a condition before increasing the traffic. I am hoping that the Bord will agree.

The Bray Retailers Group objected as well and said that the very large amount of retail space would damage existing town centres in Bray and Dun Laoghaire. Ikea have made a submission that they would like to open a large store though such a large store is not currently allowed.
