Posted by | Priorities, Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Councillor Derek Mitchell (FG), B.A.I, MSc, FCA, Member Wicklow County Council, Mid-East and Greater Dublin Regional Authorities, Wicklow’s Strategic Policy Committee on Roads. Appeal ZD06D.ZD2010 Cherrywood. Bord Pleanala Oral Hearing 13th March. Academy Plaza Hotel, 10am. Summary 1. The N11 at Fassaroe and Kilmacanoge is at least 30% over capacity because of its poor design. Traffic jams regularly are 4km back to the Cherrywood Junction. 2. 40% of Cherrywood commuters will come from the South, almost all along the N11 at Fassaroe as there is little public transport. 3. The…

Mitchell asks Bord Pleanala to ensure N11/M50 improved before Cherrywood is built

Posted by | Local Business, Local Work, Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council is planning to build a large town at Cherrywood with lots of retail and office development. Bord Pleanala is holding an Oral Hearing into the plans this week. I am very concerned that the N11/M50 will seize up with all the people who are expected to commute from Wicklow. Traffic jams regularly stretch back 4km from Fassaroe even before Cherrywood is built. I have objected to the plan and told the Oral Hearing that improving this road must be a precondition of this plan. The National Roads…

Dublin Bus agrees to look at some service improvements

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

On Tuesday Dublin Bus met with Greystones Town Council and discussed the recent bus changes. They were pleased with the increased use of the 145 and 84X and Councillors reported few complaints in Greystones. ‘I said the 84x was a good service but asked them to try to provide a return service as the busses were running empty back to the depot. They agreed to consider this. I also asked for a timetable for the introduction of Real Time information signs to Greystones and a commitment to provide them in…

Mitchell Welcomes Church Road resurfacing

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

The Council is to resurface Church Road in Greystones. This has been full of holes at the edge which means cyclists have to swerve into the traffic line to avoid them. Also the speed bumps have disintegrated. ‘I regularly cycle along it and have been pressing for something to be done for a year. We need to encourage more cycling and this will make this busy road safer’

Increase in 84x busses Welcome

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Dublin Bus has issued new timetables with effect from 27th May. The main change is that the 84 will now go to Blackrock instead of UCD. I asked them to increase the good and fast 84x service to provide a connection from Newcastle/Kilcoole to UCD and am pleased they have now provided 2 non rush hour services from Newcastle. Overall the number of busses from Newcastle will increase from 21 to 27 though some 84’s will terminate at Bray DART Station. I am asking Dublin Bus to get the 84x…

Dublin Bus Improves Plan for Greystones Area

Posted by | Community Facilities, Greystones, Transport M50/N11 | 720 Comments

Dublin Bus has amended its planned changes to services in North Wicklow following criticism. It is now applying to the National Transport Authority for permission to implement it. The 84, will run hourly as now but in future will go to Blackrock and this makes it more difficult for people from Newcastle and Kilcoole to get to UCD. I asked that they increase the 84x, which is a good service, to compensate and they will now increase it by a third which is a help. I have now asked them…

New Signs on N11 Welcome in spite of Name Controversy

Posted by | Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

Recently the National Roads Authority has put large new signs up on the North section of the N11. These now have junction numbers, are easier to read and safer if people crash into them as the lattice work supports will give more. I welcome these improvements especially the Junction numbers which will help direct strangers. There has been controversy over naming the junction to ‘Glenview’ as there is no such place. However the function is to direct motorists and it was felt that the proper names of the area such…

DART information signs cause confusion

Posted by | Greystones, Local Work, Transport M50/N11 | No Comments

The illuminated signs in the DARTS saying which direction it is going are wrong about a quarter of the time. This causes great confusion to tourists. I have written to Irish Rail get them to correct the signs or turn them off. Last night about 10 tourists were about to get off a Howth train, because the sign said it was going to Greystones. Fortunately I overheard them and told them the sign was totally wrong. It is ridiculous to have totally wrong information displayed.

Charlesland Bus Shelter arrives eventually

Posted by | Charlesland/Eden Gate, Local Work, Transport M50/N11 | 752 Comments

Dublin Bus has eventually installed a bus shelter in Charlesland. Both the Town Council and myself have been pressing for one for well over 5 years. Charlesland, with 1550 homes, is the largest private estate in Ireland and has been occupied for 10 years. We need to encourage people to use public transport and there is something wrong with the system that this simple and inexpensive task takes so long. Charlesland is also not on the list to receive a real time bus information sign. Such a large estate should…

Irish Rail to erect Kilcoole Fence but leave Bridge Open

Posted by | Kilcoole, Transport M50/N11 | 1,371 Comments

Irish Rail have confirmed that when erecting a safety fence at Kilcoole they will leave a gap, with swing gates, so pedestrians can cross. ‘Originally they were going to close the Breeches Bridge to pedestrians which would have cut the attractive walk from Greystones to Wicklow Town. I have been discussing this with Irish Rail engineers for some time and they have now agreed to leave it open with gates and instructions for the train to whistle and slow’. This will be temporary and they will design a separate walkway,…
