6 outdoor staff of Wicklow County Council have recently retired and not been replaced because of the recruitment embargo. This is affecting the maintenance of public spaces such as flowerbeds, parks, and roadside edges. The remaining staff are concentrating on keeping the beach and central area tidy in order to maintain Blue Flag status for the beach. The Tidy Towns Group is trying to get the town tidy before the judging takes place in June. There have been a number of FAS schemes in Greystones which did very useful work…

Converting first Block to a Primary Medical Centre, including a HSE facility, is great for Greystones, and a good use of this space. The developer will complete all marine work by October 2010 and after 110 years of trying to get the harbour sorted out this is great news! The developer wants to add 34 homes at the North end taking up 3 acres of the Public Park which will then be 13 acres. The Area Plan has 375 homes but Bord Pleanala took out a block in the now…
The IDA presented its plan for its 80 acre site to Greystones Town Council on Wednesday. They intend to develop the section next to Charlesland by putting in a road next January and seeking tenants. The next section they intend to sell off to a developer of Industrial sites and at Mill Road they want to rezone for Town Centre which would allow a Shopping Centre. The IDA has owned this site for 25 years and has done nothing with it except grow grass. There has been no political will…
At a recent Community Liaison meeting it was announced that the marine works for Greystones Harbour, including 2 Public slipways, would be completed by June 2010 which is about 4 months later than hoped. Sispar, the PPP partner of Wicklow County Council, are working late into the evening to complete this work.
The Draft of the next County Development Plan has been circulated to Councillors for decision in September. I have done as study of the new houses in the area and the population figures in the Plan greatly underestimate the growth that has already taken place in Greystones. The last accurate population figure of 14,600 was the 2006 Census, but since then a large number of houses have been completed and occupied and many are being built now and these have almost been ignored in the population estimates. The allocation of…
The footpath from Holywell Estate in Kilcoole needs completing to the village. The path outside Holywell is good but people must now walk in the busy and narrow Sea Road for a short section and it is dangerous. A condition of the Planning Permission was that €37,000 should be paid by the developer to the Council so they could complete the path. I have been asking the Council for a month whether this money was received and where is it now but can’t get an answer. This money must now…
The 2,000th block (out of a total of 5,000) of the seawall was laid at Greystones Harbour on the 21st May. This marks almost the halfway point in constructing the seawall. Two shifts will be worked until midnight, over the Summer to try to complete the seawall before the Winter storms.
Greystones Rugby Club is annoyed that the Council has fenced off a piece of land used by the Club. I raised this at the Town Council and The Town Manager, Sean Quirke, stated that the Council owned the land as it was not part of the land leased to the club 5 or more years ago. ‘However the club juniors sometimes use it and the Club has fenced and maintained the land for many years and it has looked well’. This has also kept campers off it. This is in…
The Planning Permission drawings for Charlesland in Greystones contained 6 traffic calming measures, 2 Zebra Crossings and 2 Traffic Signal crossings all on the Spine road none of which has been provided. They also show a children’s playground which has not been provided.
We will be pressing for a proper Health/Medical Centre, Library, Garda sub Station and for playing pitches on Lott Lane.
