Delighted Minister for Education has brought forward the new Charlesland Secondary school opening to 2020. I have been lobbying on behalf of the many worried parents who were told they were 80th on the waiting lists for the 2 Greystones Schools. I zoned a 5ha. site for this 15 years ago next to the sports facilities and I have been urging the Department to buy this for years. Currently it has temporary planning permission for use as a builders yard. I expect it will open in temporary facilities. This will…

I am calling on the Council to produce a plan for the Greenroute along the Three Trout Stream from the sea to Delgany. This should form an attractive walk and has been an objective for decades. There are various suggestions that individual developments will produce sections of it. An overall plan dealing with lighting, security, biodiversity etc. is needed so that it joins up in a coherent way. I am asking the Council to produce this plan so that each section which is developed fits in to a plan.
The Councils Capital Budget for the next 3 years was discussed at Mondays meeting. Most is spent on housing and most funds come from Government. €10m comes from Levies on Development which is spent on Roads and Amenities. My concern is that they are building everywhere in Greystones & Kilcoole, probably 800 homes at the moment, and there is an urgent need for roads, paths and amenity facilities. However the Plan only allocates 4% of road spending and 7% of Amenity spending to the Greystones area even though at least…
Cllr Derek Mitchell welcomed the developer starting work on the public park, north of the marina, but the Cliff Walk path is very muddy as a result. Both through the site where the trucks cross & along the path. I have asked the developer and Council to urgently make a better temporary surface in view of the many people using it. The developer has quickly said he will clean the crossing and will keep it clean after heavy machines have crossed. These will mostly remain in the north area so…
Greystones Way Trail speech opening by Cathaoirleach, Greystones Municipal District. 26th June 2018 5.15 pm. Cathaoirleach Wicklow County Council, Pat Vance, Ministers and TDs, Members Wicklow Co Co, Chief Executive and District Manager and staff of Wicklow Co Co, Wicklow Tourism, Uplands Council and a number of people interested in walking. Welcome to all. I am delighted to ‘open’ the Greystones Way Trail from Greystones train station to Kilmacanoge connecting to the existing Sugar Loaf Way there. An 8km trail walk from Greystones train station, Whitshed Road through the Edwardian…
This improvement to widen the road and footpath is badly needed. Previously trucks mounted the narrow pavement when passing which was very dangerous for pedestrians walking to school. We need to encourage walking to school and this wider road and proper path will help. We now need to widen the road the remainder of the way in order to provide for people walking & cycling to the 4 large schools on it, something which has been planned for many years.
The developer of the harbour houses has proposed changes which mean they now propose to overlook Mt. Haven behind the railway line. I have objected as Mount Haven Residents were previously assured they would not be overlooked. I expect the harbour houses will be altered. I have also asked that provision would be made for occasional camping, by laying down service pipes, for special authorised marine events such as Rowing & Sailing Regattas and Sea Scouts events.
‘I am pleased that Greystones South Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag again and thank the Council staff and Tidy Towns who work to keep it in good condition’
The developer has finally started work turning it into 22 new houses and 5 tall terraced houses in the old shell. The site has been derelict and an eyesore for 15 years so it is good to see progress. ‘It will be disruptive for those living and working next to it but it does need doing’. The new houses will be timber frame and be made mostly off site and craned into place. This is quicker and less disruptive than traditional construction. Overall it is expected to take 18 months…
Cllr Derek Mitchell, Cathaoirleach of Greystones District, welcomed the announcement of 4 new schools for Wicklow. I especially welcome the new Secondary school for Greystones & Kilcoole which I expect to be on the site zoned for this 15 years ago in Charlesland. Councillors deliberately zoned it so that it is next to excellent sports facilities including a running track, 5 a side pitches, tennis courts and a junior baseball diamond. ‘Rarely has a school been built next to such good public sports facilities’. It is targeted to open in…
