8th April, 2009 Mark Felton, President Greystones Chamber of Commerce. Dear Mark, Ratepayers to subsidise Government Deficit The Government has instructed Local Authorities to hand back all the pension levy to the Government. This will increase rates next year. In my view the savings, in proportion to the amount of wages paid by rates, should be kept by the Council and rates reduced next year. In Wicklow’s case 40% of wages are paid by rates and this would result in about a 5% reduction in rates next year. Instead the…

Earlier in the year the Government withdrew funding for approved road schemes and it has just restored funding for some of them.
Recent works on the R762 close to Delgany National school have narrowed the footpath and made it less safe for walkers especially children walking to school. The path lacks an edge and it merges into the narrow road. The third stage of the Delgany Traffic Calming works is to deal with this and I am calling for this to be immediately implemented as we have been waiting too long for it.
A number of people have mentioned the poor public transport to Eden Gate. This is a problem. However the 84x provides a surprisingly fast service to Dublin. Following pressure there are now 10 services in the morning rush hour and it stops at Eden Wood. I am also pressing for: • More jobs in Greystones to reduce the need to commute. • A primary school in Charlesland.
We will be pressing for a proper Health/Medical Centre, Library, Garda sub Station and for playing pitches on Lott Lane.
The marshes are a very special area and we want them preserved and support Birdwatch Ireland’s plans for the area. We want the walk to Wicklow Town improved and made safer before it can be used more people. We are trying to work with Irish Rail and the National Parks Service to produce a plan to improve it.
The Kilcoole Plan was recently finalized and I intend to press to ensure that proper facilities are provided: Children’s Playground I worked hard to ensure that the Plan provided for a Children’s Playground and small Public Park on Sea Road/LottLane. We were very involved in getting the playgrounds in Greystones and Newcastle. Both of these have worked well. The landowner has generously agreed to donate an acre for this. This site has some archaeological issues which will take time to resolve. We are pushing the Council to work with the…
This is well used but is owned by the Golf Club. I negotiated with them to improve it jointly with the Council. This is now paved and much better. The little used one at Pavillion Road was closed, as it was a source of anti-social behaviour.
The planning rules provide for a minimum plot size of a quarter of an acre and a ban on apartments in the Old Burnaby. The ban on apartments was initially removed when the last Development Plan was being prepared but I demanded and got it reinstated. I supported the area becoming an Architectural Conservation Area in this Plan. I am very keen that the atmosphere of the Burnaby is maintained and think that the planning rules have succeeded in doing this over some time. I worked as a Committee Member…
The Delgany Community Council held a meeting in the Wicklow Arms on Tuesday night to press for Heritage village status. Over 50 people attended and discussed the features which should be protected and how to go about it. I think that Delgany is attractive and that the atmosphere and character of the buildings and streets should be preserved. I am happy to assist the Delgany Community Council try to get Heritage Village Status. 11 items are listed for preservation and the village already is an Architectural Conservation Area. and we…
