Mitchell welcomes Local Government Cost Savings

The recently announced changes will abolish the 4 Town Councils in Wicklow and replace them with strengthened Area Committees of the County Council. I expect the number of County Councillors to increase from 24 to 32 because of the growth of the County in recent decades. Most Counties outside Leinster will decrease significantly. A Boundary Commission will be set up to decide local boundaries but I expect that the Greater Greystones Area will have 5 or 6 County Councillors instead of the present 9 Town Councillors. This ‘Area Committee’ will…

Mitchell Concerned that Large Cherrywood Development will produce N11 Chaos

Posted by | Community Facilities, Wicklow | No Comments

Mitchell concerned that the large Cherrywood development will result in N11 Traffic Chaos. A large Shopping Centre is being planned for Cherrywood together with more offices and apartments. The Shopping Centre is 50,000 sq. m. Just a bit smaller than Dundrum. Already much of Wicklow people’s shopping is being done in Dundrum and Carrickmines. This will add to that and further congest the overcrowded N11. There is no plan to upgrade the N11 and the Luas to Bray has been indefinitely postponed. ‘If this is approved then the N11/M50 must…

Greystones to Wicklow Town Walk study welcomed Wicklow County Council is to hire 2 Engineering Interns to do a study of how to improve this walk. Cllr Derek Mitchell welcomed this and said we need to improve this walk to make it more accessible to locals and tourists. Greystones to Wicklow Walk. Meeting with Irish Rail

Posted by | Greystones, Wicklow | No Comments

Irish Rail will be fencing most of this for safety reasons and will close off to pedestrians the Breeches Bridge at Kilcoole. I met with Irish Rail last week and they have agreed to ask bridge engineers to design a solution which will probably be a separate pedestrian bridge. However this is likely to cost over €500,000 and money must be found. ‘At least if we have a solution designed we can lobby for funds to keep it open’ said Cllr Derek Mitchell.

For safety reasons Irish Rail will be fencing this track when the bird nesting season ends. Apparently it is the only unfenced section of track in the country. Currently they are planning to close off the bridges at Three Trout Stream and the Breeches, Newcastle. This will cut an important walk for tourists and locals alike. ‘I have written to The County Manager and Irish Rail demanding that they come up with a solution which keeps the walk open and satisfies safety concerns. A simple bridge can be provided…

Toll on M50 will harm Wicklow jobs unless trucks allowed direct access to Dublin Port from the N11 in Sandymount.

Posted by | Local Work, Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

The Minister for Transport has said he plans to introduce more tolls on the M50. The existing ban on HGVs going from Wicklow on the N11to Dublin Port, the main National Port, forces them to use the M50 and doubles the mileage from Wicklow to Dublin Port thus doubling the cost of bringing goods to Wicklow. Introducing more tolls on the M50 will make transporting Wicklow goods more expensive. If the extra tolls are introduced then direct access from Dublin Port to the N11 should be restored through Sandymount. Motorists…
