Mitchell welcomes extra Council workers from the Gateway Scheme

Posted by | Wicklow | 2,866 Comments

Wicklow County Manager, Eddie Sheehy, told Monday meeting that he had applied to get 100 part time people from this scheme. Nationally 3,000 unemployed people are to work 19 hours a week working on Community projects for Councils. These have been selected from people who are unemployed. ‘I welcome this as there is much work to be done and it makes sense to get unemployed people back into work. I am disappointed that Sinn Fein’s Cllr John Brady opposed the scheme at the meeting’. The manger has identified people and begun the…

Mitchell pleased Court grants permission for Data Centre in Newtownmountkennedy

Posted by | Wicklow | 1,258 Comments

The Supreme Court decided to grant planning permission for a major data centre between Newtown and Kilpeddar. Ecological Data Centres had appealed Bord Pleanala decision to refuse it after the only objection was withdrawn. ‘I welcome this advanced industry and hope that it will actually happen. It should never have been refused if we want to encourage jobs in Wicklow’. The National Roads Authority tried to stop this even though there is plenty of capacity at the closest N11 interchange. If built, it will reduce the need to commute from…

National Transport Authority Plan ignores Wicklow

Posted by | Greystones, Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

This Plan which will set transport improvements up to 2018 ignores Wicklow in spite it having grown more than 3 of the 4 Dublin Councils. 45% of the population of Wicklow lives in the Metropolitan area and is thus obliged to accept high density development as happened with Charlesland. This % is much higher than other Mid East Counties. Population targets handed down to Councils insist on a large expansion of zoned land, for example, Greystones was required to rezone extra land for 24,000 compared to a current 17,500. The…

Offshore Wind Farm Proposal to have serious visual effect off Greystones

Posted by | Environment & Bray Head, Wicklow | No Comments

DublinArray is applying for a foreshore licence for a large wind farm on the Bray and Kish Banks. ‘Normally I support environmentally friendly proposals but I am objecting to this because it will have a major negative visual effect on Greystones and the Cliff Walk’. 145 windmills 160m high are planned and the power connection is to go by undersea cable to Shangannagh. They are to be 9km from shore at the nearest. In 2005 the Codling Bank scheme obtained a foreshore licence for 220 turbines but these are 15km…

Transport to North Wicklow seizes up again – National Transport Authority needs to do better

Posted by | Transport M50/N11, Wicklow | No Comments

Transport to North Wicklow seizes up again. National Transport Authority needs to do better. People have again been stuck in their cars for over 3 ½ hours due to problems with the M11. DART services have again been halted between Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey probably because falling trees have cut the electric wires. The DART service frequently stops here either because of flooding or trees falling and also has a low speed limit. Fridays M11 closure for most of the day was due to flooding but delays are very frequent…

Mitchell objects to huge Cherrywood development which will result in N11 Traffic Chaos

Posted by | Wicklow | 3,234 Comments

A huge Shopping Centre is being planned for Cherrywood together with more offices and apartments. The Shopping Centre is 43,000 sq. m. Just a bit smaller than Dundrum. This will further congest the overcrowded N11 and hinder the people of Wicklow trying to commute and hold onto their jobs. As a Member of the Dublin Regional Authority I have worked hard to get M50/N11 improvements included in the Plan for the Region and I have now formally objected to this shopping centre as it does not include this requirement to…

Mitchell welcomes Local Government Cost Savings

Posted by | Wicklow | 2,844 Comments

The recently announced changes will abolish the 4 Town Councils in Wicklow and replace them with strengthened Area Committees of the County Council. I expect the number of County Councillors to increase from 24 to 32 because of the growth of the County in recent decades. Most Counties outside Leinster will decrease significantly. A Boundary Commission will be set up to decide local boundaries but I expect that the Greater Greystones Area will have 5 or 6 County Councillors instead of the present 9 Town Councillors. This ‘Area Committee’ will…

Mitchell Concerned that Large Cherrywood Development will produce N11 Chaos

Posted by | Community Facilities, Wicklow | No Comments

Mitchell concerned that the large Cherrywood development will result in N11 Traffic Chaos. A large Shopping Centre is being planned for Cherrywood together with more offices and apartments. The Shopping Centre is 50,000 sq. m. Just a bit smaller than Dundrum. Already much of Wicklow people’s shopping is being done in Dundrum and Carrickmines. This will add to that and further congest the overcrowded N11. There is no plan to upgrade the N11 and the Luas to Bray has been indefinitely postponed. ‘If this is approved then the N11/M50 must…
