Greystones Councillors met on Monday with the National Transport Authority who are responsible for bus and train services. Cllr Derek Mitchell said ‘I was pleased with a very good and open discussion about the problems of Greystones & Kilcoole District. This was better than letters which I felt were more arrogant and I now feel they were taking our problems seriously. We went through a detailed list of rail and bus improvements which we requested.’
The Interim result of a study of providing more DARTs, every 20 instead of 30 minutes, to Greystones shows it is likely to be feasible. As yet this is uncosted and the final report not out. This is based on the partial double tracking idea in my 2018 paper on DART. This will take years to implement but shows a serious approach by the NTA.
More DART & diesel cars are being ordered though these will take some years to arrive. I asked that they work out how to provide longer trains to Kilcoole & Wicklow in advance of carriages arriving. More frequent weekend DARTs are hoped for at the end of 2019 when more drivers have been recruited and trained.
The NTA also agreed to our request to liaise with the N11 redesign team to include bus priority measures. The NTA are keen to have express buses and Park n’ Ride on the N11 provided they can get adequate priority.
The NTA was keen to receive E mails of problems with buses going to schools. We asked about providing extra 84xs, 84s at peak times, making the 133 reliable and other improvements. Their priority is to introduce the Bus Connects project following a revised draft coming out this Summer and they will consider changes in that context. They are keen to improve the Templecarrick School bus stop, the exit from Greystones station and a shelter at Kilcoole.
