Welcome to all.

I am delighted to ‘open’ the Greystones Way Trail from Greystones train station to Kilmacanoge connecting to the existing Sugar Loaf Way there.

An 8km trail walk from Greystones train station, Whitshed Road through the Edwardian Burnaby, past ancient Kindlestown Castle, Kindlestown Heights, Bellvue Hill, Kindlestown Woods, Ballydonagh with lovely mountain views, Glenview N11 overbridge, Quill Road to Kilmacanoge.

There it meets the Sugar Loaf Way (yellow arrows) around the west side of the mountain.

Marked by white arrows on black marker posts in rural areas and these attractive finger signs in urban areas.

It is well served by public transport. Greystones DART, Dublin Bus Numbers 184, 84 Glenview 184 bus, Kilmacanoge 45a, and Bus Eireann number 133.

The Wicklow Uplands Council and Geoff Seymour are working to open a walk from Kilmacanoge, over the little Sugar Loaf to Bray later this year and this joins up with that. This will enable a circular walk of about 3 to 4 hours and will be a good balance to the walk around Howth Head at the northern end of the DART. Later it may also connect to the Vartry Reservoir walks, Roundwood and the Wicklow Way.

I would hope that a more direct route up the Sugar Loaf can be implemented in the future which would need some issues addressed there.

I would like to thank my wife Carol, for the original route idea, the Greystones Municipal District Councillors for agreeing to allocate their tourism budget for the last 2 years to develop this walk. I would also like to acknowledge the support of   Tidy Towns, Geoff Seymour and Wicklow Uplands for advice, Coillte andDistrict Engineer Ruairi O’Hanlon and Council staff for implementing it.

A map of the route is available on www.wicklow.ie

Also I would like to commend the work of the Outdoor Recreational Strategy Group which is pushing forward with more activities and mention that a number of walks in Kilcoole have been opened this year by local groups.

Light refreshments will be served in Greystones Golf Club.
